POS Rollout

In short

A POS rollout is the step-by-step introduction of a new till system across all of a retailer's stores. It usually starts in a pilot store and then continues in waves.

Explained simply

A rollout is the distribution of a new solution to many locations. A new till system depends on many other systems. These include merchandise management, the online shop and the loyalty card. That is why it is not switched over in all stores at once.

An example: a fashion retailer with 60 stores in Austria first tests the new till in two pilot stores. Then it converts more stores week by week. Each of these groups is called a wave.

Austria also has the Cash Register Security Regulation, known as the RKSV. A new till system must meet its rules from the very first receipt.

Before the rollout, the devices are usually prepared and tested centrally. This is called staging. In the store, they then only need to be set up.

What does this mean for your business?

Plan for the tax and till rules from the start, not only in the pilot. Train the store teams before the switch. And after every go-live, plan a phase of intensive support, called hypercare.

Check whether your staging capacity matches the planned pace of the waves. And choose pilot stores that are typical of your store network.

Frequently asked questions

What are the phases of a rollout project?
First come planning and the central preparation of the devices. Then comes the test in a pilot store. After that, the stores are converted in waves, each with hypercare.
