IT Interim Management

In short

IT interim management is the temporary deployment of an experienced IT leader. They take on responsibility, for example for a vacant post, in a crisis or for a large IT project.

Explained simply

"Interim" means temporary. An interim manager is therefore a leader for a limited time. In IT, they lead the IT department or a large project, for example.

Unlike a consultant, they do not just give advice. They make decisions and are responsible for the result. At the end they hand over in an orderly way to a permanent leader or to the team.

An example: an Austrian grocery retailer wants to introduce a new till system. Nobody inside has time to lead the project. An IT interim manager takes charge until it is finished.

Interim managers work full time or alongside in part time, on site, hybrid or remote. In retail, industry experience matters. Tills, store processes and merchandise management follow their own rules.

What does this mean for your business?

Interim management pays off when someone has to act immediately. A permanent hire would then take too long. Clear goals and authority from day one are essential.

Settle three points in advance. What should be achieved by the end? Which decisions may the interim manager take alone? And to whom do they hand over? The clearer the answers, the faster the assignment takes effect.
