n8n is a tool for automating workflows between programs. You build them from building blocks on a visual canvas, with AI steps if you like.
Explained simply
In many companies, staff copy data from one program to the next. An example: an enquiry comes in through a web form. It has to go into the CRM, and then an email goes out. n8n handles workflows like this automatically.
Each step is a building block, called a "node" in n8n. According to n8n, there are nodes for more than 1,500 programs and services. They are connected on a canvas, much like a flowchart.
n8n can also include AI steps. A workflow can then summarise an email and forward it to the right department, for example.
In n8n such a sequence is called a workflow. Anyone who can program can add their own code where needed.
What does this mean for your business?
n8n runs in the vendor's cloud or on your own servers. Your own server is attractive if data should not leave your company. But then someone has to take care of operation and updates.
n8n is worth it when a workflow comes up often and involves several programs. For a rare manual step the effort is usually too great. Also decide who documents workflows and updates them when things change.
